Compensation Reservoir

You can see this Inverclyde reservoir in the map above (click to see a larger size), to the west of Loch Thom. In October we walked up the long western side of the reservoir to the dam at the top, where the waters of Loch Thom feed from its north-western end into the reservoir below. It was a raining for much of the time so not the best conditions for photography yet again!

Looking towards the narrowest point of the reservoir

ItalicLoch Thom Cottage standing alone at the top of the reservoir, half hidden in the trees (and some blue sky making an appearance for a very short while!)

One of the muddy paths we followed, looking back towards Cornalees, where we started out

At the north end of the reservoir, showing the channel which carries the water down from Loch Thom. On the left (above) you can just see the two pillars shown below:

Rather corroded and difficult to read in parts, but it was good to see something there in recognition of Robert Thom who designed the whole scheme back in the 19th century

Edward Wilson (I can't find out anything about him but I'm still searching)

The walls of the channel with a small footbridge over the top...

...and Geoffrey sheltering from the rain underneath while I went off with the camera!

The small dam at the top of the reservoir. The video below shows the top end of Loch Thom. Once again it was difficult to hold the camera steady in the strong winds up there that day!

Bridge of Weir

Another place I visited for the first time in many years was Bridge of Weir - not far from Kilmacolm (see last post). Sadly it was raining - at times heavily - so I took scarcely any photos and we didn't wander far from the car or cafe! Here are just a few random ones:

Below: where we had coffee...

...not to mention Geoffrey's apple cinnamon doughnut

The River Gryffe, also seen as a short video below:

I couldn't manage anything else before the heavens opened. However, the Wikipedia page is quite informative - see it here

Greenock Esplanade - Recent

"There can scarcely be a coastal walk in the whole of the UK to compare with this. On the one side, successions of fine, late-Victorian villas, and on the other the wondrous scenery of the Firth of Clyde." (Ian R. Mitchell)

Some photos of my favourite part of Greenock - the mile long Esplanade - where I have spent many happy hours through the years. These are fairly recent (taken over the past year or two).

Love that view!

This was the first flashing buoy used to aid navigation

View from one of the benches halfway along

A couple of the many fine old villas along The Esplanade

Sandringham Terrace - a grand block of typical
sandstone flats - as seen from Campbell Street

Floral tribute to the visit of the QE2 in 2007
(unfortunately I wasn't there to see her)

Looking east towards the Ocean Terminal

Ocean Terminal at the east end of The Esplanade - site of the old Princes Pier

Short video of views from The Esplanade
(best watched without the sound as it's only wind!)
